Route 66 - Tulsa to Oklahoma City

Day 5, Route 66 - Tulsa Oklahoma to Oklahoma City 178 miles.

Slow start to the day with a power box lid breaking off and falling on my toes - lucky I have short toes because they would have been a lot shorter!! After taking a few wrong turns trying to find the Tulsa Route 66 Harley Davidson dealership, we finally set off on Route 66 at midday.

Stopped at Sapulpa and visited Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum which has a 66ft tall gas pump out the front. Whilst the Museum was quite small it had a great exhibit of cars from a private collection. From here we took the Route 66 1926-28 loop through Depew, a small town which is a step back in time particularly with the shingle verandahs.  I caught up with a very friendly local, who owns most of the town, and had a good chat with him.

In the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum this immaculate 1957 Chev convertible caught my eye

Some of the original town buildings at Depew, which was on the 1926 - 1928 Route 66. Note the shingle roof verandahs.
Cruising on we stopped at Stroud and checked out the famed Rock Cafe then called into Jerry McClanahan's Gallery in Chandler. Jerry is the author and artist of a book we purchased earlier on called 'EZ66 Guide for travellers', which was a great help on our Route 66 adventure.  We were warmly welcomed by Jerry (got him to sign our book) and were there quite a while having a chat.
Stroud - Rock Cafe (circa 1939) and still going strong today!
From Chandler  we passed many abandoned Gas Stations, some overgrown by weeds. Stopped at Arcadia which centrepiece is the 1898 Round Barn which now houses a Route 66 Exhibit (closed as we were running a bit late!), with dances and events held in the loft.
Arcadia 1898 Round Barn, restored in 1992 to the current condition.
From here we put Billy (Navman with voice of Billy Connolly) on and hammered down the Motorway to our RV Park - Oklahoma City East.  Arrived at 6.50pm - fellow travellers were getting a bit concerned however still enjoyed Happy Hour without us!!!
