Route 66 - Oklahoma City to Amarillo

Day 8, Route 66 - Oklahoma City to Amarillo 272 miles.

Travelled Motorway 40 to Hydro and stopped for morning tea at Lucille's filling station built in 1929. From 1941 Lucille Hamon ran the business for 59 years until her death - it is now abandoned but believe it is preserved by owners of the modern Lucille's Roadhouse, down the track.  Ventured back on Highway 40 and passed many wind turbines. Stopped at Elk City and toured Route 66 Historical Museum, which was great. Down the street was a Flea Market so grabbed some lunch from a stall - a Beach Burger which was deep fried! Surprisingly it was very tasty but boy the chili had quite an impact! Glad we shared as servings are very big in America.

The museum had buildings depicting the Route 66 history

Years of drought forced people to pack up all their possessions and head west (on Route 66) looking for better opportunities

This hair dressers curling machine caught my eye, looked more like an electric shock machine.

Hels checking out wares at the flea market.

We brought lunch, a deep fried burger!
Travelled onto Erick - home to Roger Miller and much to my delight, Sheb Wooley (Purple People Eater fame). Quite a few interesting old buildings including an abandoned Sand Hills Curiosity Shop which was decorated with different signs.

Some of the art deco buildings in Erik

You may ask Sheb Wooley?? Well Sheb is famous for one of my memorable songs, The Purple People Eater!
Drove Route 66 into Texas and stopped at Shamrock where we called into U-Drop Inn/Tower Conoco (art deco 1936) - a diner returned to its original condition and has a booth where Elvis Presley sat in 1960!  Travelling through this part of Texas we passed large wind farms and were having to deal with a very strong winds today which made it difficult to keep the motor home on the road.
We crossed into Texas, thought there may have been a bigger sign!

Inside the diner, where Elvis had dined in 1960
After arriving in Amarillo we settled into our RV park and prepared to go out for dinner. We had been looking forward to dining out at The Big Texan Brewery and were picked up by a stretch limo, Texan style! A great night out was enjoyed by all.
Is this an American Long Horn, or maybe our stretch limo.

The Big Texan Brewery, where we enjoyed good food with great Texan hospitality

The raised table is for the meal challenge.
If you can eat a 72ounce (2kg) steak dinner in an hour it's free, we saw 2 try, both unsuccessful.

Very big meals cooked in the dining room.
