Atherton Tablelands

Sunset at Valley View
After topping up with fuel we continued on the Kennedy Highway stopping at Atherton for a coffee at G-5 (great coffee!), then travelled to Mareeba and stocked up with supplies.  Continued on to Valley View Bush Retreat where we had a great catch up with Mike and Chris.  Stayed here for 2 weeks which enabled us to visit some local attractions plus relax in the surrounds.  Had my stitches removed at Amaroo Medical clinic, visited the Mareeba Markets and had the Toyota serviced.  Also drove to Tinnaroo to meet up with our daughter-in-law's brother Brent and his partner Karen to check out what is required when we house sit for 4 weeks.  Met Jess and Ruby, their two dogs who we will be looking after.

Went to Emerald Falls where we had a nice walk although with fires in the area the smoke hindered the scenic view.  Called into Skybury Cafe and Roastery, the home of Skybury Coffee, for lunch and try their coffee.  This has become one of the top visitor attractions on the Atherton Tablelands known not only for its purest Australian Arabica Coffee, but also for its views - although once again the smoke did not enhance the view! This is a nice spot to stop for a meal or just a coffee.  On the way home we had to call into Emerald Creek Ice-Creamery, manufacturers of premium ice-cream and sorbet.  Had been here a few times and had to make sure the ice-cream was as delicious as we remembered - and it was!!
Emerald Creek Falls
Very dry but an easy walk to the falls
Skybury Cafe
I had the best burger, Coffee Braised Beef Burger

Has to  stop at Emerald Creek Ice creamery

Had a drive down the Gillies Highway - runs from Atherton in the Tablelands Region to Gordonvale in the Cairns Region through the Gillies Range. The 19km section reputedly has 263 bends and would not recommend anyone who suffers car sickness to venture up or down the Gillies!  Met up with Tom who I worked with in Darwin, and his wife Lyn for lunch - thoroughly enjoyed their company and great to be able to pick up from when we last saw them a few years prior.
